Treatment Process Overview
Personalized Care for Lasting Relief
At Southern Indiana TMJ, we provide personalized treatment plans designed to address the underlying causes of TMJ disorders. Our comprehensive phased treatment approach begins with understanding your individual symptoms, condition, and goals. Our treatment is typically structured in different phases; however, not every patient requires each phase. Whether through lifestyle modifications or advanced therapeutic interventions, our goal is to help you regain comfort and control over your TMJ health.

Acute Pain Relief
The first phase of treatment focuses on relieving acute pain. The goal is to reduce TMJ symptoms, relax overactive muscles, and decrease joint inflammation. Treatment during this phase may include neuromodulator use with botulinum toxin type A treatments, cryotherapy, specific TENS therapy, low level laser light therapy (LLLT), trigger point injections, and the use of a temporary splint.
PHASE
1
Imaging
The second phase of treatment focuses on diagnostic imaging to better understand the condition of the temporomandibular joint. We typically begin with a panoramic film obtained from your general dentist to provide an initial assessment of the temporomandibular joint. For some patients, additional imaging may be recommended to gather more detailed information. This may include a referral for a CBCT and/or an MRI, which can help guide a more precise and effective treatment plan.
PHASE
2
Oral Appliance
The third phase of treatment involves the use of a custom oral appliance. This phase includes designing and fitting the appropriate nighttime appliance or orthotic to support joint stability, relax surrounding muscles, and prevent further damage to the TMJ or disc. Regular follow-up visits during the first year are essential to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments for continued effectiveness.
PHASE
3
Collaboration
The fourth phase of treatment is focused on interdisciplinary collaboration. Because TMJ/TMD is a multifaceted condition, it often requires coordination with other healthcare providers to address its underlying causes. Referrals may include specialists such as an orofacial myofunctional therapist, chiropractor, sleep doctor, neurologist, physical therapy, or ENT.
PHASE
4
Maintenance
The fifth and final phase of treatment is the maintenance phase. This phase includes annual follow-up visits to monitor your condition, ensure continued stability, and address any concerns that may arise. The goal is to support long-term relief, reinforce progress made during treatment, and help prevent future flare-ups or setbacks.
