What is TMJ disorder?
TMJ disorder (or TMD) refers to a group of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joints, jaw muscles, and surrounding structures.
What causes TMJ disorders?
TMJ disorders can stem from a variety of factors, including joint dysfunction, muscle imbalance, trauma/whiplash, stress, jaw grinding/clenching, and imbalanced bites. Additional contributors may include restricted tongue function, sleep-disordered breathing, postural imbalances, parafunctional habits, hormonal influences, diet influences, and hypermobility.
What are common conditions associated with TMJ and/or TMD?
Several interconnected health conditions are frequently associated with TMJ and/or TMD. These overlapping conditions can influence symptoms, treatment outcomes, and overall management. Addressing them as part of a comprehensive and multidisciplinary treatment approach can lead to better results.
These may include:
- Autoimmune disorders
- Hypothyroidism
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Sleep-disordered breathing
- Orofacial myofunctional disorders
- Arthritis
- Cervical spine misalignments
- Pelvic floor dysfunction
- Scoliosis
- Headaches/Migraines
- Eagle’s Syndrome
- Fibromyalgia
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
- Magnesium deficiency
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Stress
- PTSD, depression, and/or anxiety
Can TMJ contribute to other health conditions?
Yes, TMJ disorders can affect more than just the jaw. Because the joint is closely connected to the muscles, nerves, and structures of the head and neck, dysfunction can lead to a variety of related health issues such as chronic headaches/migraines, neck and shoulder muscle tension and pain, ear symptoms such as ringing (tinnitus) or stuffiness, facial pain and pressure, sleep disturbances, numb/tingling fingers, and postural problems.
What treatments are available?
TMJ treatment is tailored to each patient’s specific needs. The primary goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms while addressing the root causes of dysfunction.
Treatment options may include:
- Neuromuscular modulators such as Botulinum Toxin therapy
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- FDA-cleared TMJ/TMD TENS therapy
- Trigger point injections
- Temporary splints
- Oral appliance/orthotic
- Referrals to appropriate providers,
- Low laser light therapy (LLLT)
